The Terror (1963)
For this year's Halloween movie, I decided to choose a true "classic". Obscure to all but the most dedicated film/horror nuts, "The Terror" was the product of available sets, actors, and time. Having just filmed the amazing "The Raven" as part of his Edger Allen Poe series, Roger Corman realized that he still had time and means to squeak out another film. So in true Corman style, he did!
This time, however, he decided to let a few newbies to the industry get some filmmaking under their belts, and let others besides himself, such as Francis Ford Coppola, Jack Hill, Monte Hellman, and even young star Jack Nicholson himself, direct certain scenes. It's not a great movie by any means (unlike Corman's actual Poe Series films), and you can tell it was done in a bit of a rush. But for what it is, it's still entertaining. Plus, you can't go wrong with a young, fresh faced Nicholson, along with an aging Boris Karloff in one of his last movie rolls (though he would continue acting until around 1968).
So pull up a seat, turn down the lights, and enjoy The Terror!
Oh, and Happy Halloween!
