The TOAD CODE and an Extra Continues Trick in Battletoads (NES) - Retrogaming Easter Eggs
833In Battletoads for the NES, there's a super easy cheat code you can enter right on the title screen that will grant you extra lives when you start the game. It's called the Toad Code and it's radical AND gnarly.
On the title screen, simply hold A, B, and DOWN as you Press Start to begin the game. You'll hear an explosion sound effect, and now you'll begin with 5 lives instead of the normal 3 lives. Use this code EVERY TIME you continue to continue with 5 lives instead of 3!
Another neat trick you can do is this: If you start a TWO PLAYER game, beat up the second player until he gets a game over. Do not continue with the second player, then play through the game with the first player as normal. When you get a game over, continue as the SECOND PLAYER, and don't forget to use the Toad Code!
If you alternate players ever time you get a game over AND you use the Toad Code, you'll get FIVE CONTINUES with SIX LIVES per continue, as opposed to the normal three continues with four lives per continue.
