Well, get ready for a shocker! According to E John, the creative director of Dragon Age Dread wolf, your horse actually isn't going any faster when you make it sprint. The Frostbite engine used to make the game couldn't load levels fast enough for a horse to sprint through them. So E John had to add some speed lines and adjust the camera to make it look like your horse is sprinting when in reality, it's just trotting at the same speed.

Your trust in Bio Ware may have been shattered, but now you know the truth. And who knows, maybe all the other mounts in the game are just as slow as the horse. We may never know. But, that's just part of the mystery and excitement of video games!
