The Ultimate Doom | Part 16: Lost and Confused
The Ultimate Doom was released in 1995, and despite the demonic, gorey, and violent imagery, was likely never designed to be a horror game. Even if it was, the Doom is nothing like the horror games of today. Keep those facts in mind when you watch me get startled so badly in this video that I end up enabling auto-run, opening the map screen, and falling off of a platform, all during my terrified flailing.

Considered by most to be the true father of the first person shooter genre, Doom was developed and published by iD Software in 1993 for DOS PCs. With the first episode of the game, Knee Deep in the Dead, released for free under the "Shareware" distribution model it quickly became one of the most popular intellectual properties to date, spawning sequels, ports, and reboots. The Ultimate Doom, released in 1995, updated the game's code and added a fourth episode titled Thy Flesh Consumed.
As punishment for assaulting a superior officer in response to being ordered to fire on unarmed civilians, an unnamed space marine is imprisoned on Mars. There, the Union Aerospace Corporation has been secretly experimenting with interdimensional travel. Something goes horribly wrong, and creatures from Hell itself begin to flood through the gateways in their facilities on Deimos and Phobos, the two orbiting moons. When Deimos completely vanishes, the marine is sent to Phobos as part of an attempt to stem the tide. With his squadmates quickly falling to the demonic hordes, it falls to him to rip and tear his way straight to Hell.
