It's backfired 🔁

In an interview with the #TrêsporQuatro videocast, political scientist Paulo Roberto de Souza assesses that the Lula administration could turn the US offensive, with the imposition of 50% tariffs on Brazilian products, into a domestic political advantage.

“The government has actually received a gift. You have a far-right that has monopolized nationalism in recent years and is now being challenged. This creates a new paradigm in the dispute over national meaning,” he analyzes.

For him, the rhetoric of an external enemy can help unite sectors of society around the government, as has happened at other times in history. “The US, in fact, is an expert at saving candidacies with the rhetoric of national unity against an external enemy,” he points out.

Economist Daniel da Conceição, who was also interviewed in the #BrasildeFato videocast, believes that the immediate economic impact of the tariffs should be limited, as Brazilian products should find new markets. However, he points out that Donald Trump's gesture could alert pro-Bolsonaro sectors linked to agribusiness.

"They were handed over as the main hostages of Bolsonaro's actions, so that there would be some kind of economic hardship so he could escape his political predicament," adds Conceição.
