Walking Dead Saints & Sinners, awesome gameplay. I've yet to play a game set in The Walking Dead universe that I liked that wasn't made by Telltale. But they're dead now (sort of), and so the wait for the next great Walking Dead video game begins. After playing The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, however, it's possible the wait will be a short one.
Saints & Sinners, out January 23, 2020 for PC VR platforms, has a pretty obvious first-person setup. The Oculus Touch controllers are your hands, and with them you can stab, shoot, beat, grab, or push zombies. I've played plenty of VR games like this, and while there's nothing inherently wrong with the formula, its entertainment value doesn't last long.
This Walking Dead offering adds some much-welcome depth to the gameplay proceedings in a couple of ways, however. First, you can carry a lot of gear on your person, which allows for some combat variety. You have two holster slots (for pistols or knives/shivs), two heavy weapon slots (for machine guns or large melee weapons), and, awesomely, a backpack. You're able to stash extra weapons, gear.

But the most welcome layer of depth to The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is the choice system built into NPC interactions. In my demo, I happened upon a group of survivors (word of warning: don't approach with a gun drawn; they won't like that). I approached the leader, and he said he'd give me access to their supply stash if I helped rescue his kidnapped brother. I agreed and made my way a couple of houses down the block. I snuck upstairs to where they were holed up, approached, and was told that the brother had done something I won't mention here for spoiler purposes. And then I was given a choice: kill the kidnapped brother, join up with the second group, and then go back and take out the first group that sent me over here. Or stick to the original plan and fight these guys (I should note that I was surrounded by about four or five armed survivors). I opted to go for the double-cross option, as I can hardly ever resist it when given an option in a video game. To seal the deal, I had to walk into the bathroom where the captive brother was being held, draw my gun, and shoot him. So I did, and suddenly I had several new friends and, as I'd learn when we all went back over to the first group's home base, several new enemies as well.

Taken all together – the crafting, the hub-style mission-based world structure, and the choice-driven NPC situations – I came away very impressed with Saints & Sinners. I wouldn't go so far as to call it an RPG, by any stretch, but it feels like a fully fleshed-out game that happens to be played in VR, rather than a shallow one-trick VR gimmick pony. Because that inherent VR side of it is pretty fun! So long as you're not swarmed, you can reach out and grab a single undead walker, then take out a hatchet and chop its head off (and put the severed head in your backpack!), or just shoot them, shotgun-blast them, stab them through the eye, or try and stealthily avoid them altogether. Saints & Sinners offers a lot of reasons to be optimistic, and I can't wait to play more.
