The Witcher 2 (Gameplay #9) - Defender of The Troll
One of Witcher 2's main gameplay-related problems is that the force field-like Quen ability is extremely powerful, which in turns means that avoiding enemy attacks becomes much less important and thus reduces both the difficulty of the game as well as the tactical nature of the combat. TW2 starts out as a brutally difficult, almost Ninja Gaiden-esque third-person action game in which Geralt can't even parry incoming attacks properly, but as the player accrues new abilities the challenge drops dramatically. Most RPGs have some version of this inverse difficulty curse (where the game starts out tough and gets progressively easier) but in Witcher 2 it's so flagrant that it feels downright broken and unbalanced. Hacking and slashing still retains its basic charm thanks to great-looking animations, some nice enemy variety and plenty of loot whoring (perhaps a bit too much of the latter, though), but one can't escape the feeling that the game's combat system could have been so much more.
That said, Witcher 2's trolls are simply awesome...
