If you have trouble obtaining the towel here's a quick guide. I've sped through all the dialogue but you can take your time and speak to the people around if you want to. This is the only time and small window in which to obtain the towel. It is not available anywhere else.

For clearer instructions:
Pick your clothing, change into your chosen outfit.
Drop the towel on the floor.
Talk to the Chamberlain.
After you talk to him, he will ask you to follow him.
Before you leave, pick up the towel.
You must do this in this order as the inventory is locked for the duration of the rest of your time here and only when you return to your room and leave will you be able to access your inventory again.

Note: If you do not drop the towel before speaking to the Chamberlain, he will take the towel out of your inventory, which is why you need to drop it before you speak to him and pick it up before you leave the room with him. Once you return to your room and leave, the Chamberlain will again speak to you. Once this is over you should have access to your inventory again and access to the towel.
