The Wizards is going to be classed as a Wave Shooter by most, and that's fair, it essentially is one. I got more of a Tower Defense vibe from in and there were some elements that broke away. "Walking" through town with some story in the background followed by a 'boss' fight for example.
The different powers are probably what set it apart from others. The gestures were well thought out and felt great. Very natural and easy to accomplish once understood. The only hiccup was with Fireball occasionally not going off and I couldn't tell if that was me or not.
The choice of power to use on specific enemy types is what gives it more of a TD feel to me rather than straight up wave shooter. Pure opinion. For the most part, enemies come in waves and you shoot them with spells. If casting force lightning on a nine foot tall ogre doesn't sound like a good time, (IE, you're burnt out on wave shooters and the genre is dead to you,) you may want to pass. There are too many of them and it's a bit sad to see The Wizards go down that path but I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it.
It doesn't show through as well in the mirror but the game looked amazing in the HMD. Especially the scale of the dragon... Can't wait to see him again.
Free/trackpad/slide locomotion is coming within a few weeks. They have heard our please (incessant crying) and have consented. The first thing they're working on is a locomotion option. I think this game would be vastly improved with it.
I think this is worth the $19.99 price tag. There's plenty of game here and I'm itching to get back and continue my Quantum Leap journey to repair the timeline. Hopefully I will continue to enjoy my time in game.
