Soulkeeper VR - VR Gameplay HTC Vive
SoulKeeper VR is one of the titles I saw over the past year that I've been eagerly awaiting. I really wanted to love this game and spend 20 hours on it by now... Sadly in its current EA state, I can't do that.
Instead of my usual analysis that I do in the comments I'm going to paste the notes that I sent to the dev as they were fresh in my mind right after playing the game and his response. My contact at Helm Systems is extremely humble and willing to take feedback. My interactions with him have lead me to believe that most of these issues will be addressed. Assuming the rest of the team is as passionate and humble as Andru.
Again, what follows are my quick short hand notes and Andru's response:
"Quick notes:
Locomotion is locked to the orientation of the HMD instead of the controller, AKA Onward style. Either provide an option or use the Onward style of orienting based on the left controller.
I had issues with moving to the right. I swapped controllers to try and rule out a hardware issue. Unless both controllers are failing in the same way on the right side of the trackpad, it seems like a bug.
I had issues trackpad locomoting through doors, specifically the one right before you meet the tutorial mage.
Walking up to tables to interact with items could be difficult if I wasn't perfectly centered in the room. Even then it seemed to be iffy on whether it would let me get close enough.
Some items in the tutorial were not able to be picked up.
I was able to clip through walls in the tutorial and almost get stuck.
I died in the middle, staff, tutorial and I was placed in a state in my room where I was unable to unlock the door to exit. Needs a checkpoint in the middle of the 3 tutorial rooms or at least after picking up the weapons.
Vision dimming as I took hits was a frustrating experience as I can't fight or defend myself when I'm blind. Effectively limiting me to a fraction of my actual HP as once my vision dims and I can't see my target all I can do is stand there and die.
Sword does damage just waggling. I should need to make real swings for damage to register.
Didn't seem to be able to block attacks, only dodge.
Staff spells seemed to run out too soon leaving me with just my sword against many enemies or mages. This could just be practice and mind set but initial impressions is that the staff is both OP and worthless at the same time.
The self cast effects were flash but just as apt to blind you as being damaged by the enemy.
The angle of the hands is way off. Customizable orientation would be nice. Right now I have to break my hand to aim properly.
Sound balance seemed off. Some voices were very low and difficult to hear.
AI didn't respond to being attacked at range.
Some in game models don't fit the world like the grave digger.
Menu shows up behind objects.
I feel bad. I feel like I just tore your baby apart after a hell of a day... I do think there's a lot of potential here it's just a lot rougher than I expected for a $40.00 game. I think it could be worth it when you guys are done with in but right now it seems a little too rough for the general public."
*The response from the dev:
"No worries, the baby must be torn in half so it can evolve into a larger more tear resistance baby! lol
Good stuff, I am going to basically copy and paste right into our QA section for the programmers.
Some things will be getting a fix in here, hopefully some of them will go live tomorrow.
We should have a report of it tomorrow when I get the team alive and awake so I will likely do a community update about it on what our feedback was, what we can fix asap and what may take some time.
I am still super happy you shared this, torn baby or not it helps tremendously."
Right now I can't recommend the game. Even with the 13% off sale it's still nearly $35 for something that doesn't feel like a good, playable experience.
I do hope they can turn it around but there are just too many issues on launch day for this to be as successful as I'd hoped it would be.
Don't forget to Like, Sub and Share! A few clicks mean a lot to me. Thank you.
