A $65 billion nuclear fusion reactor called ITER is being constructed in southern France.

The Iter project is a multi-billion dollar international collaboration to build a prototype of a fusion power plant. The goal of the project is to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion as a source of safe, clean, and virtually limitless energy for the world. The project involves dozens of partners from around the world, including the European Union, the United States, China, Russia, South Korea, and Japan. Construction of the prototype, known as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), began in 2007 and is expected to be completed in 2025. The ITER facility will use a tokamak design to confine and heat hydrogen plasma to the conditions needed for nuclear fusion to occur.
