The worst refereeing decision in the history of the FIFA World Cup
It was set to be one of the finest games in FIFA World Cup history. The winner would take on Italy, who had rebounded from three draws and four goalless games for Paolo Rossi to racking up 3 successive wins over the holders Argentina, the favourites Brazil and the dark horses Poland, with Rossi scoring five goals. The other semi-final pitted France vs West Germany. France hadn’t reached this stage since the days of Just Fontaine and 1958, meanwhile West Germany were longing for a third FIFA World Cup. The scores were tied at 1-1 when substitute Patrick Battiston was floored by Harald Schumacher. The West German goalkeeper obliterated the French attacker, breaking ribs, vertebrae, teeth and leaving him unconscious and on a stretcher. The referee gave a goal kick. Harald Schumacher would save two penalties and set West Germany on course for three successive FIFA World Cup finals, finally winning their third title at the third time of asking in 1990.
