The John Wick series has been a runaway train since its first instalment became an unexpected sleeper hit in 2014. Directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch - who had worked with Keanu Reeves as stunt doubles and coordinators on the Wachowski Sisters’ legendary Matrix Trilogy - and written by Derek Kolstad, this tale of the world’s greatest hitman being drawn back into a complex world of violence and deception charmed audiences with its dry humor and relentless, slickly choreographed action. Two sequels followed in 2017 and 2019, with a fourth due in 2022.
And now the internet is abuzz with rumors that a new film called Nobody could end up tying in with the John Wick films. Starring Bob Odenkirk as Hutch Mansell, a mild-mannered family man driven to acts of extreme violence by unwanted criminal attention, it’s a slick and gritty looking action thriller with a sense of humor, directed by Russian director Ilya Naishuller, who helmed 2015’s first-person action marathon Hardcore Henry.
And there are plenty of surprising clues in its first trailer - and in its creative pedigree - to support the theory that Nobody may take place within the Wickverse, or the John Wick Cinematic Universe, or JWCU, whatever you want to call it. In today’s video, we’re exploring that theory and seeing if there’s any merit to its conclusions.
