This Artistic Psychological Lovecraftian Film Defines Incomprehensible Slow Descent Into Madness
We all are ruled by fear, it can be of different things or people, and it may be rational or irrational. However, one of the biggest fears we have is the fear of the unknown.
Lovecraftian horror is a subgenre of horror fiction that emphasizes the horror of the fear of the unknown and the mysterious. It deals with entities and characters from beyond our dimension. It emphasizes the horror of the unknowable and incomprehensible instead of using gore and other elements of shock. It is named after H.P Lovecraft, an American author, who emphasized themes of cosmic dread, forbidden and dangerous knowledge, madness, non-human influences on humanity, religion, and superstition in his writing. However, it has been analyzed and criticized in recent years for the racism seen in the horror content produced by Lovecraft.
The Lighthouse is a black and white film directed and produced by Robert Eggers, which was released in 2019. He co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Max Eggers. It started as an attempt by Max to create a contemporary take on “The Light-House” by Edgar Allen Poe. When Robert joined, it ended up becoming a successful attempt at redefining Lovecraftian horror.
