This Game is an Underappreciated Master Piece!
On the first of September 2015, a hotly anticipated game was released by Konami.
A little game called Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain.
This game was a resounding success and received rave reviews from fans and critics alike.
So you'll be forgiven for not remembering that on that same day that same year, another game was released. Mad Max.
Mad Max isn't remembered with the same vigor or verve that Metal Gear 5 is.
Nor does it command the same respect in conversations of one of the greatest games ever made.
And why should it? You probably forgot about it until you seen this thumbnail and title.
I actually bought the game when it came out but I never saw what was in front of me as I played it.
Only upon revisiting the game after 7 years has it become clear to me that I and many others have missed out on one of the best games ever.
Again, you may not agree, I'm hopefully going to change your mind by outlining the aspects of this game that I think make it a masterpiece.
Fallout new vegas is a game I know and love. It is one of the best games of all time and is in my list for top 10 games ever made.
Comment below if you'd like to see that list.
Obsidian managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat with new vegas, something, I'm afraid to say, they never quite emulated with the outer wilds.
The outer wilds was set to be a success and it had everything going for it but after spending some time with the game, it felt like a lot of the world had aspects threw into it for the sake of it. Which ultimately dulled the experience.
The reason I am talking about the success and failures of these two games respectively is because it highlights one of the most important aspects of a game.
The balance between abundance and emptiness. Something the outer wilds failed at and something that fallout new vegas and mad max excel at.
This may be a bit of bias creeping in on my part as I possibly like the post apocalyptic feeling in games.
But in a world that is for the most part made up of sand, shotgun shells and guzaline, I feel like avalanche studios got the balance perfect.
While traversing the wide open spaces of the post apocalyptic mad max map, any time I found ammo for my shotgun, fuel for the magnum opus, or the elixir of life, it felt like a new discovery.
And in between times there is a mess of dangerous encampments full of damage and destruction it was always refreshing to find these key items scattered throughout the world.
There are also a plethora of camps and no small number of enemies to deal with in each of them. In open worlds, an area can be ruined by the sheer number of unnecessary enemies and items within.
Mad max managed to find a great balance with the number of enemies scattered throughout the wasteland along with the amount of scrap to salvage. As well as the unsightly number of psychos to deal with, inside an encampment.
Beautifully emulating the mad max movies, most notably mad max 2: the road warrior. Which leads me onto my next point. Understanding.
## Understanding
Movies are probably my favorite form of media. Watching movies is probably the only thing I do more than play video games. The Mad max franchise began in 1979 and continued until 1985 with mad max beyond thunderdome.
From 1975 to 1985 is probably the my favorite decade for cinema, while it is by no means the best, it has some outright classics, star wars, back to the future, apocalypse now, the shining, and alien to name a few.
