A lot of companies tried to beat Nintendo by offering more powerful hardware, but the strategy never worked. The Game Gear, for example, supported colors and had a backlit screen, but it still couldn’t beat the Game Boy’s monochrome, non-lit screen. The company Bandai, had another approach though. Instead of over-ambitious hardware, they focused on a minimalist console with more practice hardware. Was the WonderSwan a good handheld console, and if so, why couldn’t it beat Nintendo?
