Italics are a typeface weight, just like regular or bold, whose letters are individually and uniquely designed. They’re not just slanted letters, as many italic letterforms are drastically different from their non-italic forms. When letters are just slanted without the letterforms actually changing, this is called Oblique type. Every letterform can have an oblique effect applied to it, but italic forms have to be built in by the typeface designer.

Most people don’t know about this distinction because many typefaces’ italic forms look very similar to their oblique forms, and most word processing software doesn’t differentiate between italics and obliques.
