The final story of Forspoken was "nothing like" the original version worked on by Gary Whitta, who was one of the credited main writers of the game, released by Luminous Productions on January 24, 2023. The action role-playing game featured talents from Whitta, who wrote Star Wars: Rogue One and The Book of Eli, to Amy Hennig who wrote Uncharted and Legacy of Kain. Square originally hired Whitta to conceptualized the entire world of Athia, which the game takes place in. But some months later through development, the developers scrapped the original story idea and instead went with an isekai story about a young woman from the real world being sucked into a fantasy realm, the story found in the game today. The version was nothing like what Whitta had originally wrote. Whitta was unavailable to take on the rebooted story, which was taken on by other writers. Instead, he is credited in the game under 'Original Concept' while fellow writer Amy Hennig is credited under 'Story Concept'.

Forspoken has since been critised for how divorced its story and dialogue were from the gameplay and the world of Athia. And while the detailed world building and stylish combat merited the game a closer look, the story is unfortunately slow to launch, sluggish in its pacing, and fraught with highs and lows in the writing, dialogue and characterizations.
