Here's the breakdown of what happened - the exclusion zone was way larger than I anticipated (I GOT COCKY), and the vents were basically right at the edge. When I approached, I ENTERED the exclusion zone, not knowing how far out it was. So, like any good white dwarf star, it immediately pulled me in and every system on board failed, making it impossible to exit the gravity well. Once thrusters were gone, and the canopy breached, it was just a matter of time.
