I've been working on a new screen-space shader for Unity URP to offer easy-to-use and highly customizable volumetric fog with opaque shadowing support. This fog works really well for stylized, low-poly scenes with limited transparency effects, though I'm looking into options for improved transparency support. This volumetric fog shader works well with alpha-clip cutouts.
I've implemented some interesting stylized, non-realistic rendering functionality into this fog shader. You can artificially darken shadows, artificially brighten lit areas, and use distance-based color ramps to control fog emission, fog lit color, and fog shadow color.
Apart from these stylized lighting controls, I've also included 32^3 volumetric perlin noise that gives the fog additional texture. In the future, I'd like to sample this noise using a noise texture itself in order to generate a sort of "flow map" texture in 3d.
Unfortunately, I've run into some challenges using the built-in Additional Lights parameters in Unity - flickering, inconsistent presence, additional lights disappearing even when ticked, etc. Maybe I will expose an Additional Light manager that will handle Additional Light data manually.
