Most of Pixar's films, including their short films, are highly praised, and although the three films released after Toy Story 3 didn't quite reach their highest standards, they still exceeded the quality of most other animation studios at their worst. However, Inside Out stood out as a masterpiece and can be considered one of Pixar's best films overall, rivaling the greatness of Toy Story 3.
Inside Out showcases Pixar's exceptional animation, featuring stunningly vibrant colors, imaginative settings, and meticulously crafted backgrounds. The character designs cleverly match the emotions portrayed, demonstrating Pixar's inventiveness. Michael Giacchino's score is enchanting, charming, and ranks among the year's best, reminiscent of his exceptional work in Up.
The script is another standout aspect of Inside Out, blending clever and witty comedy seamlessly with poignant drama. The film delves into truly moving and insightful territory, never feeling manipulative or excessive. While the concept of the story may not be the most innovative, it offers a refreshing and original take for Pixar. The pacing is slightly slower compared to other Disney films, but it remains captivating throughout. This film allowed for a deep emotional connection with the main character, Riley, making it one of the most emotionally resonant Pixar films since Toy Story 3.
The characters in Inside Out are a delight. Anger, Fear, Disgust, and Bing Bong (Riley's imaginary friend) steal every scene they are in, while Sadness manages to deliver funny one-liners even in her melancholic state. Joy radiates positivity and Riley is more than just a stereotypical teen girl, making it easy to empathize with her. The voice acting is superb, with Amy Poehler perfectly capturing Joy's liveliness and humanity, Lewis Black bringing explosive energy to Anger, and the rest of the cast delivering memorable and endearing performances.
