Gameplay of the game Threetris for Game Boy, a romhack of Tetris by thirtythree.

I was pretty skeptical when I saw this romhack. How can you change a critical element (four pieces per block) to the best game ever made and not have it be an unbalanced, mess? Well, this game really surprised me with how good it is!

Three things surprised me. I was surprised at how different the game feels. I mean, it's still blocks falling from the ceiling. But I never realized how much using the original tetrominos caused me to make specific strategies, and all of those strategies get thrown out the window now that the pieces are made of only three blocks. It looks so familiar but plays so different.

Next, I was surprised at how fun it is. I guess it shouldn't surprise me, I mean it is still Tetris at heart.

Last, it surprised me at how complete the game feels. It doesn't feel like a half baked idea, or that something is missing from the game (like, you know, a fourth piece in every block). Instead, this feels like it easily could've been an official release, and in my opinion even better than some official releases of Tetris.

I don't really have anything bad to say about this game. But it's funny, I never realized how passionate I can feel towards INANIMATE BLOCKS in a video game. I found myself really missing the square block from the original game. And let me just say I HATE THAT STUPID DIAGONAL PIECE. Oh, you'll know it when you see it.
