Time Crisis II arcade now works in MAME! Here's a high-scoring playthrough with no damage taken. Playing on MAME 254 with a GUN4IR light gun. Please enjoy!

There are currently many graphical glitches with the emulation. Some stages are too dark, and often you can't see that "shot" effect wherever you're aiming when the trigger's pulled. I often have to fire blindly at stuff as a result. I'm not using any crosshairs, which makes this trickier.

However, as this run shows, it is still possible to score decently, clear the game, and clear the game without taking a hit. I have a beefy PC, which allowed me to play at the full frame rate without much audio lag.

This is my favorite Time Crisis game, so I was extremely happy to see this finally playable in MAME. A big thank you to the people who made this happen!

Released in 1997, Time Crisis II added multiplayer support, a scoring system, and combos to the Time Crisis formula. You can choose to play solo, or let another player tag in during your game.

The first thing you'll notice--when enemies are gonna shoot you, you see a red "crisis shot" come towards you. This is your indication to hide in cover (release the pedal), or else you take damage. Time Crisis 1 didn't have this.

Every enemy dies in one hit, however most can be shot 3 times. The first shot on an enemy awards a certain value, depending on which body part is targeted; the head is the most valuable. The second and third shots are just for scoring only.

Every 10 shots you make on enemies, bosses, and destructible objects without missing, you earn the No Miss Bonus. This starts as little as 500 points, increasing by 500 to a max of 5,000 for every 10 no-miss shots. The No-Miss Hit Bonus can also carry over between stages. This is where the majority of the points lie in this game, so a missed shot can cost you thousands.

Yellow soldiers are worth a bonus 5,000 points. Hunt them down! Most appear in the three secret areas, one in each stage:

* Stage 1: In Area 2, shoot Jacob's head every time you see him. His hat will fly off, and he makes a special noise. At the end of the area, instead of fighting the tank miniboss, you get a secret area with yellow soldiers.

* Stage 2: In Area 2, shoot the two yellow soldiers passing by on the train. You take a different route with more yellow soldiers. I typically skip this route as apparently you can score more without it.

* Stage 2: In Area 1, shoot Wild Dog 27 times. At the end of the area, some yellow soldiers appear.

There's a time bonus too, but it doesn't seem worth much by comparison. Thus, you should focus on combos and the No Miss Bonus.

If you 1CC the game, you get a star next to your name in the leaderboards. Further Time Crisis games and Namco shooters followed suit with this, and even House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn did it as well!

Time Crisis II is the perfect example of a game that you must play repeatedly in order to improve at it. Really, that's my advice for light gun games in general. But the most important thing is that you must have fun! And I believe Time Crisis II is super fun. The pacing is so buttery smooth and satisfying.
