Pokémon Sword is a role-playing video game developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It (along with Pokémon Shield) is the first installment in the eighth generation of the Pokémon video game series and the second in the series to be released on a home game console, after Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!. Officially debuting in February 2019, Pokémon Sword was released worldwide on November 15, 2019.
Sword's concept planning began immediately following the completion of Pokémon Sun and Moon in 2016, while full production began a year later in late 2017. As with most other main series Pokémon games, it chronicle the main character's journey in the Galar region, based on Great Britain, alongside rivals Hop, Bede and Marnie aiming to dethrone the Pokémon League Champion Leon and defeat Team Yell, a group of fans obsessed over Marnie. Sword introduces several new features such as Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing, functions that increase size and change forms of certain Pokémon; the Wild Area, a large open world with free camera movement; and raids with co-op battling; along with the addition of 81 new Pokémon and 13 regional variants of preexisting Pokémon. It also reintroduces features previously seen in Sun and Moon and Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, such as regional variants and roaming Pokémon depicted in the overworld.
Sword received generally positive reviews from critics with particular praise towards the creature design, new features and an emphasis on simplicity and streamlined encounters, although some criticized the smaller Pokédex, graphical quality, and lack of polish or substance.
