On this day, a legendary naval commander was born. On September 29th, 1758, Horatio Nelson was born in Norfolk, England. Nelson joined the Royal Navy at the age of 13 and quickly worked his way up the ranks to become an officer. He served during the American Revolution, but his real moment to shine came in the Napoleonic Wars. Admiral Nelson commanded the Royal Navy to a series of victories against the French fleet, including a key engagement at the mouth of the Nile River in 1798 which ruined Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign. However, Nelson’s finest hour came in 1805 off Cape Trafalgar in Spain, in which he employed brilliant and unorthodox tactics to split and destroy a larger Franco-Spanish fleet. Nelson was killed by a marksman during the battle, but his heroism was revered throughout Britain and played a key role in Napoleon’s eventual defeat.
