Tom Felton on Playing Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway
Two decades after first stepping into the robes of Draco Malfoy, is still amazed by the enduring power of the Wizarding World. Speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub while promoting Gandhi at TIFF 2025, Felton shared his reaction to the new Harry Potter TV series currently in production. He told Collider:
"I’m very excited. I can’t believe, really, that the wizarding world is still going as strong as it is. Most fans that shout out Potter at me weren’t born when the first film was even made. So, I’m really excited. The fact that they're shooting it in Leavesden Studios, where we made the films. It’s a bit surreal again. I look forward to meeting the new Draco 2.0."
That new Draco Malfoy will be played by Lox Pratt, one of several fresh faces stepping into the franchise for HBO’s ambitious decade-long adaptation. The series, set for a 2027 debut, will cover all 7 of J.K. Rowling’s books across 10 seasons, bringing new depth and detail to the story while introducing a new generation of actors. Of course, Felton is still greeted as Draco in his daily life. When asked if people yell Draco's signature catchphrase of "Potter!" in public, he laughed and admitted he'd actually had a run-in with people before entering the studio at TIFF:
"I think I just had [that] outside, ‘Potter!’ Yes, I get that quite a bit. I always smile and find it fun."
Felton also joked that his casting in Gandhi may have had less to do with auditions and more with director Hansal Mehta’s daughter being a fan of his Hogwarts days: "I think that’s how I got the part. I think Hansal wanted a selfie for his daughter, our director. I think that’s how I got the part."
Felton hasn’t truly "disapparated" from the world of Harry Potter. In addition to weighing in on the new series, he’ll be returning to the role of Draco Malfoy in the stage production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway. This time, he’ll play the adult Draco, father to Scorpius, in the continuation of the Potter saga. "Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life," Felton said in a statement. "Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I’ll also be the exact age Draco is in the play."
The (rather divisive) show follows Harry’s son, Albus Severus, as he befriends Draco’s son Scorpius in Slytherin — a storyline that turns the entire series on its head. Felton reflected on stepping back into the role:
"It’s surreal to be stepping back into his shoes — and of course his iconic platinum blond hair — and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world. I look forward to joining this incredible company and being a part of the Broadway community."
Felton’s run begins November 11, 2025, and concludes March 22, 2026, at the Lyric Theatre. It marks the first time an original cast member has reprised their role in the play since it debuted. Harry Potter will premiere on HBO in 2027. Stay tuned at Collider for more news from TIFF.
