The Paper Cast on Those Office Easter Eggs and Jaw-Dropping Finale
Twenty years ago, a little sitcom on NBC about a mid-level paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania, turned awkward silences, malfunctioning printers, and deadpan stares at the camera into comedy gold. The Office wasn’t just a funny appointment-viewing series that raked in millions of viewers for the network — it redefined the genre’s look and feel using the mockumentary format to blur the line between deadpan reality and absolute absurdity.
Now, just 12 years after the sitcom’s series finale comes The Paper, Peacock’s new comedy from Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, which asks a very relevant question: What if that same National Geographic-type lens followed a struggling Midwestern newspaper instead of a paper supply company? With the journalism field and its print entities undoubtedly struggling today, the subject matter is all too real.
With Domhnall Gleeson leading a cast of journalists, schemers, and romantics, all trying to keep Toledo, Ohio’s Truth Teller paper alive, the series is not a reboot or a sequel, but it does carry the DNA of the original series. And, as the cast tells Collider with a lot of laughter (and the occasional threat of death by printing press for Season 2), the newsroom mockumentary has a scrappy, chaotic heartbeat all its own.
