Alien Romulus 2 Update: David Jonsson Teases What Could Come Next for Andy
For his feature debut, filmmaker Cal McMau takes audiences inside the gritty underworld of the British prison system in Wasteman. The extremely tense dramatic thriller, which premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, spotlights two of Hollywood's most exciting rising stars, David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus) and Tom Blyth (The Hunger Games: Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes), in the leading roles of two incarcerated young men navigating a brutal institution.
In the movie, Jonsson plays Taylor, an inmate who stays under the radar by keeping his head down. He spends his days inconspicuously, living off the memories of a son he hasn't seen in decades and the occasional pill to ease the tediousness of his routine. Now, after serving years for a petty crime, he's offered early parole — if he can avoid trouble. Unfortunately, Taylor's new cellmate, Dee (Blyth), is power-hungry and volatile, and on his climb to the top of the food chain, he wants Taylor by his side.
At TIFF, Jonsson and Blyth stopped by the Collider Media Studio to sit down with Perri Nemiroff at the Cinema Center, where they discussed the importance of telling this story and why both actors jumped at the opportunity. In addition to his scene-stealing performance in Alien: Romulus, Jonsson can also be seen starring in Francis Lawrence's Stephen King adaptation, The Long Walk, opposite Mark Hamill. Blyth, after commanding the role of a young President Snow in Lawrence's Hunger Games prequel, can next be seen in the upcoming thriller drama, Plainclothes. Both actors, who reveal to Nemiroff that they've been friends for some time now, are well on their way to establishing massively successful careers in Hollywood, but getting to share scenes only bolstered their talents.
