The World Ends with You: The Animation[a] is a 2021 Japanese anime television series adaptation of the action role-playing game The World Ends with You published by Square Enix. The anime was a joint production between Square Enix, DOMERICA, and Shin-Ei Animation.

Production and release

The anime series was directed by Kazuya Ichikawa with screenplay adapted from the game by Midori Gotō. Tetsuya Nomura and Gen Kobayashi designed the characters, and Takeharu Ishimoto composed the series' music. The game's producer Tomohiko Hirano and director Tatsuya Kando were supervising. According to Kando, there had always been intent to create an anime series from the game, but there was no time or budget at the time of the game's release.[2][3] Early thoughts by Kando were positive based on how similar the storyboards were to the original game. Ichikawa wanted the anime to be recognized as his masterpiece. The original cast returned with Kōki Uchiyama voicing the lead Neku.[4]

A preview of the first episode for the anime was released on September 18, 2020, alongside announcements of online campaigns to promote the series.[5] As more than a decade had passed from the game's release to the anime's broadcast, some of the elements of the game had been modernized for the anime series, such as the use of smartphones rather than the original's choice of flip phones.[6] The opening theme is "Twister -Animation OP ver.-" performed by MJR, while the ending theme is "Carpe Diem" performed by ASCA.[7] The opening theme was originally scheduled to be "Teenage City Riot" by ALI, but was replaced just prior to the series' airing following the arrest of the band's drummer Kahadio over an alleged refund scam.[8][9] It aired worldwide from April 10 to June 26, 2021, through Funimation, as well as the Super Animeism block on MBS and TBS.[10][11][6][12][13]

An English dub of anime series was made by Funimation, premiering on September 17, 2021.[15] Following Sony's acquisition of Crunchyroll, the series was moved to this service.

Mr. Mew (にゃんタン, Nyan-tan) is Shiki Misaki's stuffed cat (often referred to as a pig by Neku) who fights alongside her in The World Ends with You.

He was her first sewing project; Eri and Shiki met while Shiki was making him. While Shiki never parts with him for seemingly sentimental reasons, it is revealed that he is actually a necessity for her survival in the Game. Shiki's mind brings it to life and act on its own, which causes Mr. Mew to sprout claws and attack enemies and he is her only method of combat. While not particularly strong, his attacks are very quick.

In some instances, he is shown to make multiple copies of himself. During her Fusion attacks he transforms, becoming larger and more powerful. Neku's nickname for Mr. Mew is "Piggy". When briefly possessed by the O-Pin, Shiki continues to use Mr. Mew as her main method of attack, albeit more powerful. She can now duplicate Mr. Mew without Fusion (although she only uses this attack once).

Mr. Mew also appears in the caution notes from Another Day, noting that the story of Another Day is completely separate from the main storyline. He also appears as two wearable items. One as an accessory and another as a full body suit.

Mr. Mew is also the main weapon in Shiki's Level 2 and Level 3 Fusion. The Level 2 Fusion makes Mr. Mew grow and duplicate. He becomes large enough for Neku and Shiki to ride him (he is about twice the Players' size). The Level 3 Fusion makes Mr. Mew grow to gigantic proportions, shooting lasers from his eyes and greatly damaging all enemies in the battlefield.
