[Top 100 Modern VGTunes] #096 - Imperishable Night - Iro Master Spark
Console: PC
Developer: Team Shanghai Alice
Original Release: 2004
There's still one word missing in the title. When I'm bored, I'll search for it in a Kanji dictionary. "Iro" means color and "master spark" was written in Katakana.
Song Comments:
This is actually a pretty good example for how well a song can fit with a stage. Imperishable Night is a 2D shooter and this is the music for the 4th boss on a certain path. Unlike most other boss tunes, this one starts mid-stage. If you fight without dying, you will defeat that boss in about two and a half minutes, where the music gets pretty intense - to accomodate a brief high-speed section. After about 20 seconds, it gets calm again, and that's when the game slows down to let the boss re-enter the scene for the end-stage battle. Pretty epic use of music, and the tune is fun to listen to, as well.
Game Comments:
One of my favorite shooters of all time, it has incredibly beautiful and original bullet patterns without being too hard (well, unless you play on Hard or Lunatic, but then you brought it upon yourself). All the bosses are shrine maiden, and each phase of the boss fight (e.g. bullet pattern) is called a spell. Most bosses have as many as 10 spells, or even more. The chick in the artwork is the 5th boss of Imperishable Night, but sadly, neither her nor any of the other bosses look nearly as attractive in the game... so Sentimental Shooting will have to fill that gap. (Don't worry, there's no Sentimental Shooting on this list, even though now that I think about it, I think it HAD pretty good music... :P)
