The Xbox is a home video game console and the first title in the Xbox series of video game consoles manufactured by Microsoft. It was released on November 15, 2001, in North America, followed by Japan on February 22, 2002, and Australia and Europe on March 14, 2002. It was Microsoft's first foray into the console market, competing with Sony's PlayStation 2, Nintendo's GameCube, and Sega's Dreamcast. Microsoft was the third American company to design and manufacture a console after Atari and 3DO Company. Atari ceased production of the Jaguar in 1996 and stopped making consoles altogether.

Announced in 2000, the Xbox featured more powerful hardware compared to its rivals, utilizing a modified 733 MHz Intel Pentium III processor and a 233 MHz Nvidia NV2A graphics card. Known for its size and weight due to having PC components, it was the first console to include a built-in hard drive. In November 2002, Microsoft launched Xbox Live, an online gaming service that allowed subscribers to download new content and connect with other players through a broadband connection. Unlike Sega and Sony's online services, Xbox Live was supported in the original console design through an integrated Ethernet port. This service gave Microsoft a head start in online gaming and helped the Xbox become a relevant competitor to other sixth-generation consoles. The popularity of commercially appealing titles like Halo 2 contributed to the rise of online gaming, particularly first-person shooters. Despite this and holding the second position ahead of the GameCube and Sega's Dreamcast, Xbox sales consistently lagged behind the PlayStation 2.

The successor to the Xbox, the Xbox 360, was launched on November 22, 2005. Manufacturing and sales of the Xbox were first halted in Japan in 2005, as it was Microsoft's worst-performing market. Other regions followed suit in 2006. The last game for the Xbox in Europe was Xiaolin Showdown, released in June 2007, and the last game in North America was Madden NFL 09, released in August 2008. Support for out-of-warranty consoles was discontinued on March 2, 2009. The console's online system (Xbox Live) was shut down on April 15, 2010.
