Hello everyone!
Today, we venture into the lands of Ares himself, for Sparta!
Sons of Herakles, bred for war, and raised to be soldiers, the citizens of Sparta are the finest infantry in the ancient world. Every aspect of Spartan life and society is geared towards warfare, their helot slaves enabling the citizens to pursue warrior perfection in the agoge and krypeia. Although neither Phllip II, nor his son Alexander the Great conquered Sparta itself, the Spartans were nevertheless eventually forced to yield to the League of Corinth. With the Greek world in turmoil following Alexander's death, they are once more free to reclaim their former glory, leading Greece and the world beyond.
An entirely militarised culture, the Spartans are truly a force to be reckoned with.
However, despite Sparta’s command of Greek forces during the recent Greco-Persian Wars, and its noble sacrifice at Thermopylae, Athenai’s own victories have dramatically increased its prestige, and war with Persia is high on its agenda. Although Sparta may not be sufficiently recovered to face the Persians, with allies such as Korinthos it could yet defeat Athenai and the Delian League states.
To do this, Sparta’s Peloponnesian League must achieve a decisive naval victory against Athenai and break the loyalty of its allies. This may not be straightforward, however; Spartan land forces may be supreme, but Athenai’s navy is undefeated, and for the Spartans – the ultimate warriors - intrigue and espionage leave a foul taste.
Spartan domination of the Helot people means they command an abundant and durable slave population. These thralls manage the lesser matters in life – agriculture, craftsmanship and so forth - freeing true Spartans to pursue an existence of martial perfection. With one of the most exacting and gruelling military training regimes in the ancient world, Sparta produces veteran warriors before they even reach the battlefield.
