Basic jist is hit enemies with their weaknesses to increase the odds of getting certain items. Hitting them with other damage types/elements will also yield other items and/or lower the odds of getting certain items.

Use Fire on a green slime -- higher chance of Slime Core
Use Earth on green slime -- higher chance of earth ore
Use a Bashing weapon on green slime -- higher chance for Slime Residue, lower chance of Slime Core.

Stuff like that.
