Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue! (PS1 vs DC)
I'm sure you all heard about how surprisingly good this game is for a licensed game. This game may not be as impressive as the first game was on Mega Drive, but it's quality is just as impressive as the technical feats of the first game. It's like the movie too. The first game was great, but the second game shows how to make a great sequel. They took the aspect of making mundane everyday objects and turn them into large areas for little things to explore from the first game & turn it into a really well done 3D collectathon on the PS1, so how does it compare to the Dreamcast port?
The Dreamcast version was released a year after the original PS1 version was released. Some notable changes have been made to this version that is not present in the PS1 version.
Here's the Negatives of the DC version:
• Buzz only has 8 directions when using the analog stick instead of 360 degrees.
• This version has some issues with the audio, such as the music stopping at a certain point, and sound effects can sound pretty busted at times like how Mr. Potato Head uses Hamm's "Way to go, Buzz!" line, when giving him his ear in Andy's House.
• There is numerous amounts of graphical bugs in this game, like how the Zurg Warriors in Alleys & Gullies (the Shiny Zurg Shield guys) has the wrong textures and uses Bo Peep's texture making them look like a mess, (Though, it's only a problem in the PAL Version) and Woody's face in the final level having a completely fucked up texture, making him look like a demon from hell.
• The Framerate is awful in this version. It constantly drop frames all the time for no apparent reason.
• This port has the Wrath of Cortex PS2 & Finding Nemo GCN problem where the load times are way too long. (Though, when I played this game, the load times were much shorter. Perhaps this was fixed in the PAL version, or the Emulator I used cut the load times in half)
• While the Game has higher quality textures and better lighting, it's bogged down by the horrendous fog in certain levels.
• EVEN SAVING THE GAME IS BUSTED IN THIS VERSION as you can't overwrite a file you're currently using like the other versions & you have to save on another file. This takes up space on your VMU & the only way you can save without taking so much space on you're VMU is to use the new delete file function, then Save on a new file.
Here's the Positives of the DC Version:
• This port has the best quality for the Music & Sound Effects out of any version
• The FMV cutscenes have the best Video & Audio Quality out of any version as well
• Besides the fog, the textures, (the one's that aren't broken that is) and lighting is in a higher in this version.
Now, here's the Positives of the PS1 Version:
• Buzz has full 360 degrees when you use the analog stick instead of 8 Directions.
• There are no instances where the audio bugs out.
• There are no graphical errors.
• The Framerate stays at a consistent 30fps in the US version & 25fps in the EU version.
• The Load times are pretty fast.
• While the Textures & Lighting are simplified in this version, there is no fog.
• Saving is straightforward in this version. You can just overwrite you save file if you need to and the game will save just like that. No need to fill up your Memory Card with TS2 saves or deleting saves for space.
Here's the Negatives of the PS1 Version
• Besides PC, this version has the worst quality for the Music & Sound Effects.
• The FMV cutscenes have the worst Video & Audio Quality out of any version, no exceptions.
So which version is the recommended way to play? PS1, no competition. What the hell happened to the Dreamcast port? This is without a doubt one of THE laziest ports I have ever played for a game. This port was delayed too, so how did it still end up like this? I know I only got up to Construction Yard, but trust me this port gets worse from there. While the PS1 version doesn't have the best audio quality and the FMV cutscenes aren't as detailed, the DC version is riddled with buggy graphics, terrible controls, terrible framerates, awful load times (from what I seen & heard), horrendous fog, & a BUSTED Save System. Basically, avoid the DC version & just stick to the PS1 version. I guess Sony does what Segain't.
P.S: The PS1 version was played using the PAL version via the DuckStation Emulator on PC, & The DC version was played using the PAL version via the Flycast Emulator on PC with a few graphical glitches.
