After an impressive playoff debut, the Atlanta Hawks are looking to solidify Trae Young as their franchise player with a massive contract extension.
According to reports, Young has agreed to a five-year, $207 million contract extension with Atlanta. At the moment, Young is slated to earn $172 million over the next five years, which would make up 25% of the Hawks' projected cap space.
"However, if Young meets the criteria for the Derrick Rose rule, his salary can start at up to 30 percent of the cap in the first season of the deal. That would push the projected value of the deal as a whole to roughly $207 million. In order for a player to become eligible for the Rose Rule, he must make an All-NBA Team, win MVP or win Defensive Player of the Year in the season before signing or in two of the previous three seasons." (Per CBS Sports).
"Ice Trae" became a household name this postseason with standout performances against the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers before running out of gas against the eventual champion Milwaukee Bucks. But Young's brash on-court persona and the success he experienced this past season should catapult him into the next echelon of NBA guards.
