[Trails through Daybreak] Unused Final Chapter Map: Dirke Memorial Park - Historic Preservation Area
► Playlist: • Trails through Daybreak | Kuro no Kis...
While the events of Daybreak/Kuro's Final Chapter all happen in Edith, a single 4SPG aside, that may not have always been the case at some point during development.
There is a dungeon placed between the Vashtar Palace Ruins (m6200) and Tyrell District Waterways (m7100) that was intented to be the first dungeon the player would visit during the Final Chapter, and while its model remains in the game, it's in a very unfinished state. This map uses the string "m7000".
Let's go over what this naming scheme means:
The letter at the start of the string denotes the type of map it is. In this case, "m" is used for dungeons, but there's also "c" for Edith or "e" for event-only maps, for example.
Then, the first number is used to represent the Chapter it's used on. 0 for the Prologue and up to 7 for the Final Chapter.
The second number indicates the order these maps appear in their Chapter.
The third number represents the different areas within the same map. In the case of city/town maps you can just load the interior of buildings.
And finally, the fourth number is, as far as I'm aware, only used to differentiate the Underground Bases for all factions during Chapter 5 since they're all basically the same.
If you're curious, there are two more unused maps in the game that I was able to find. The first one corresponds to Chapter 1: m1000, a dungeon which appears between the Underground Ruins in Station Street (m0100) and Creil Outskirts (m1100); and the second is e0210: an event map supposed to appear between the Autobahn where Van races Maxim (e0200) and Aaron's Inner World, where he fights Taikun one on one (e0220).
Unfortunately, there's nothing left of them and you just appear in a black void. I'll have to check the script/scena files to see if there's anything else...
But with that (lenghty) explanation out of the way, let's go back to the topic at hand!
🠚 Exploring the valley: 0:00
As you can see, this map is pretty unfinished in the visual department, with no skybox and using flat colors instead of textures for everything. There's a general idea for the layout of this place although the collision for the ramps doesn't work properly, so I have to change my Y-axis coordinates as I move to reach the lower parts.
There are a few boxes around that can be destroyed but no item drops will appear after breaking them. Likewise, although there are some chests and two Charging Stations, one at the entrance and another one at end of the area, it's not possible to interact with either object.
Opening the minimap shows that, well, there's no actual minimap for this area and its name defaults to the title of the game since no name for it exists. However, it's interesting to note that text for "Dirke Memorial Park - Entrance" remains and it's placed where the loading trigger is (more on that at the end).
Lastly, no music plays if you load directly into this map, so I added some while editing the video. I can't say if this place was supposed to have its own theme or if it would have just reused something else.
🠚 Aerial view: 2:29
Since I didn't explore the whole area, I included this small segment to show more of it.
🠚 Loading zone: 3:38
One of the most interesting details is the "Dirke Memorial Park - Entrance" text that appears above the loading trigger and if you were to go through it... it works! You're back at the entrance of the park, next to the locked gate. It's even possible to follow the road that would lead to this unused area if you were to "jump" over it!
This gate is always locked even in Daybreak II/Kuro II, so this map doesn't appear in the next game either.
UPDATE: thanks to DizendoLinhas and Chaotix641 for pointing out that this map is actually used in Kai no Kiseki! This dungeon is visited during Act 2 - Van's Route 2: Alter Dawn ~White Remnants~, and its name is "Dirke Memorial Park - Historic Preservation Area" (ディルク記念公園・歴史保全区面).
