Trains at: Farnborough, SWML, 10/08/19
111A pleasant enough hours session spent at Farnborough railway station on the South Western Mainline where we see plenty of services from South Western Railway.
Farnborough was opened by the London and South Western Railway in 1838, the same year that the line was completed. From its inception the station has always been a through station, this however wasn't the only station to have been built to serve the town, 11 years later in 1849 the South Eastern Railway opened their line known as the North Downs Line and had their own station serving Farnborough, so for a long time you had two stations both named Farnborough. However because the original station was built on a mainline it soon gained the name Farnborough (Main) by many people and eventually stuck, the station signs simply say Farnborough but if you look on the national rail network map you'll see that they identify the station as Farnborough main. As does the current franchise holder.
As with the previous stations that have been covered so far you will notice that there is a huge gap separating the two platforms, this was because there was an island platform built here.
The station has gone through some modifications over the years, in 2011 the main forecourt went through refurbishments which included two new lifts added to the station to aid in the mobility for disabled passengers across the station As well as a new transport interchange making life easier for buses and taxis to get into the station. In 2012 the booking office when through a heavy overhaul and was eventually enlarged. In 2014 the car park was given the once over and given a second deck making spaces easier to get to.
