Trains at: Leighton Buzzard, WCML, 24/02/18
A very cold but enjoyable afternoon spent at Leighton Buzzard on the West Coast Mainline where we see plenty of services from Virgin Trains, London Northwestern Railway and freight from DB Cargo UK.
Leighton Buzzard station was built in 1838 on April 9th by the London and Birmingham Railway. The station was a junction station when it was connected to dunstable in May 1848, the station was home to a signal box located at the southern end of the station known affectionally as Leighton No. 2 Signal Box. The station was also known purely as Leighton before eventually becoming Leighton Buzzard.
The station has seen several redevelopment programmes during its lifetime, the station was moved 160 metres south by the London and Northwestern Railway in Febuary 1859 and the overall station as its now seen was once again redone in 1989 when the platforms were lengthened as to accommodate 12 car trains and a £1.8m project to rebuild the station was started.
During the later stages of the 1950's the platforms were altered for a more permanent concrete bridge and platform shelters, booking office, waiting hall, central heating and electric lighting. Other improvements that were also made were cycle storage and parcels loading bay which was eventually removed when the dunstable branch line was closed in the 1960's.
My next station is going to be Bletchley on the West Coast Mainline.
