As the eternal Autobots vs Decepticons war continues to rage in Transformers, Optimus Prime names the greatest crackshot he's ever met. The Energon Universe era is in full swing, and now that Prime and the Autobots are in control of Teletraan I, they have been bringing back their fallen comrades. One Autobot in particular was brought back by Prime, and now fans know why the leader was keen to have this Autobot back in the fight.
Coming from the creative team of Daniel Warren Johnson, Jorge Corona, Mike Spicer and Rus Wooton, Transformers #7 finds the Autobots taking a moment to regroup following their battle with the Decepticons in the previous issue. Arcee finds Carly practicing with a rifle, ready to take the fight to the Decepticons after the death of her father.
Arcee tries to bond with the vengeance-minded Carly, practicing some shooting of her own. Arcee remarks that, "Optimus says I’m the best shot he’s ever seen." First appearing in 1986’s Transformers: The Movie, Arcee went on to became a fixture of the franchise, showing up in several comics, animated series and movies over the years. Including her in the Energon Universe makes sense not only for her skill in battle, but also due to her wisdom and compassion. In addition to learning about Prime’s high opinion of her this issue, fans also learn a little bit about Arcee’s backstory in the Energon Universe. Arcee’s family were killed in the Siege of Cybertron, which saw the Decepticons take power on the Transformers’ homeworld. She was rescued by Ultra Magnus, who proceeded to train her into the fierce warrior she is today.
Transformers #7 shows her value off of the battlefield, as Arcee is quick to warn the younger Carly against the dangers of getting caught up in the heat of battle. "I wanted justice for my people," Arcee explains, before confessing, "Ultra Magnus died because of me. Because of my path of hate." Even though they come from different worlds, Arcee recognizes the pain Carly is going through following the death of her father, and warns her against falling under the spell of vengeance, saying that that path "takes more than it heals… If it heals at all."
Writer Daniel Warren Johnson has been keen to explore the effects of trauma in his take on Transformers, and the approach has proved to be a critical and commercial success. Through Arcee’s new backstory, Johnson and new artist Jorge Corona continue to explore the trauma of violence and warfare, which is truly remarkable considering all this stems from a 1980s toy-line. Optimus Prime lists Arcee as his most valued warrior, but she's more than just an amazing shot, as her wisdom and compassion make her a fundamental part of the Autobot faction of Transformers.
