Transformers Rise of the Beasts Review
Written By: Qui-Gon Jim
Optimus Prime and Bumblebee are back in action in the follow-up to 2018’s Bumblebee in Transformers Rise of the Beasts the second film in this rebooted franchise. The film follows the heroic autobots and their new human allies as they must stop Scorge and the Terrorcons from find this film’s magical artifact, a warp crystal that can summon the world eater Unicron, an ancient Transformers God of Destruction.
Along the way the autobots are joined by the Maximals, a group of beast based Transformers from the distant future that can to Earth thousands of years ago to hide crystals on Earth.
Transformers Rise of the Beasts while being the most entertaining film in the franchise so far falls into the traps that have plagued the live action franchise since the beginning with a similar plot line structure to the previous films. The film does do a serviceable job of being a big explosive blockbuster and it does have a better visual style than previous mainline films but if you were already tired of the same story the last five times then this won’t do anything for you, at least the film is far shorter than some of the previous films.
Performances of our main human characters were great and easily the best of the mainline Transformers movies. Anthony Ramos plays a struggling ex-soldier turned car booster named Noah Diaz while Dominique Fishback plays Elena Wallace, a museum intern with a thirst for knowledge and history. The pair work well together and while not as endearing as Charlie from Bumblebee they are still fun characters.
Our robot friends are also played well. Peter Cullen returns as Optimus Prime who in this film is struggling with regret for causing his friends to be stranded on Earth and Ron Pearlman plays his descendent, Optimus Primal. Peter Dinklage plays the villain, the Terrorcon named Scourge, the tracker bot that serves Unicron as his main enforcer. Those that may have seen the 86 movie might recognize the name but the character acts more like Galvatron than his original name sake.
It’s clear Hasbro has plans for this franchise with some interesting cameos and references and hopefully pan out to some interesting and new stories. Rise of the Beasts is a fun movie and like I said previously the best of the franchise so far, however if you found yourself tired of the same old formula then this won’t do much for you. There is a ton of rich Transformers lore dip from so maybe it’s time to hire those writers for your films. We give Transformers Rise of the Beasts a 7 out of 10.
