Simple way to guess the number with maximum 20 essences, might be less if you are lucky.

1st chance always choose '5'

depends on NPC reply,
if LOWER next choose '3'
if HIGHER next choose '8'

2nd chance '3' or '8'

check NPC reply,
if in 2nd chance you choose '3' (LOWER), now NPC reply 'LOWER' your answer is between '1' or '2'. 50-50 chance here, use your 3rd chance to choose between '1' or '2'. for example if you choose '1' your answer still wrong, means your answer confirm is '2' and vice versa.
