A soldier killed in Afghanistan on Wednesday has been named as Lance Corporal Jonathan James McKinlay.

LCpl McKinlay, of B Company, The First Battalion The Rifles, was killed by small arms fire while on patrol with his team and members of the Afghan Uniform Police in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province.

The 33 year old joined the Army in 1996 and had completed deployments in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, a soldier killed at a training ground in Kent has been named by the Ministry of Defence as Fusilier Dean Griffiths.

He was 21 and from the 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh. He died after being shot during an exercise at the MOD site in Lydd, Romney Marsh, at around 2.45pm on Thursday.
