TriGunXSword's Dark Souls 3 playthrough part 47 FINAL: The Soul of Cinder
*If you want to see me fight the Soul of Cinder solo (NG+) and get a look at the End of Fire Ending and more, stick around after the credits because I recorded that just for you guys*
So now that we've wrapped up pretty much all the loose ends I can, it's time to proceed to the First Flame. The Soul of Cinder is probably the most diverse humanoid boss in the series, commanding at least 5 different melee weapon movesets on top of his limited but diverse arsenal of sorceries, pyromancies, and miracles. This fight will truly test your ability to deal with every kind of attack, and as you'd expect his second phase is both incredibly dangerous and familiar (if you've played Dark Souls 1 anyways). I don't think you can parry him though, I've never tried but considering all the changes to the parry mechanic since the first game I seriously doubt you can parry a greatsword.
His first phase is far from straightforward, as he can change his weapon after a certain amount of time (seems to be time based and not damage based). He will always start with a greatsword but can change to either a scepter, spear, or curved sword at any point. Honestly his curved sword moveset is by far his scariest one as it grants him the fastest and most aggressive melee attack patterns of his first form. I'd actually throw his scepter form as his second most dangerous entirely because of the homing crystal soulmass that he summons, which doesn't dissipate if he changes forms (unless you can stagger him), which can lead to serious problems if say he has the soulmass combined with the curved sword. His spear is probably his least dangerous form as most of his attacks can be sidestepped if you know what you're doing, but the damage output is quite high due to the nature of thrusting attacks.
Phase two is where the real fun begins, as now we get into stunlock combo territory with a greatsword. The Soul of Cinder has a 5 hit combo that will pretty much always stunlock you if you're hit by any of them, forcing you to take the remaining hits in the combo. Thankfully there seems to be some kind of timed cooldown for that move so he can't just chain it over and over again, but that's only one of his dangerous attacks. His moveset is pretty similar to Gwyn's moveset from Dark Souls 1 outside of that new 5 hit combo and a new miracle that he can cast that chases the player with a rain of sunlight spears. This second form is as relentless as you'd expect, and you'll probably be a bit low on flasks by the time you get here if you haven't mastered phase one yet. The best strategy is to literally take it one hit at a time, stay topped off as much as possible, and just wait for an opening instead of trying to force one. The best openings you'll get to attack is immediately after his 5 hit combo and during the animation for his new miracle, and that's about the only time you can safely risk a second or third hit (depending on weapon speed).
In any case the fight is over and it's time to reap the rewards with the Lord of Hollows ending cutscene.
