7The Jupiter Ace by Jupiter Cantab was a British home computer of the early 1980s. The Ace differed from other microcomputers of the time in that its programming environment used Forth instead of the more popular BASIC.
The Jupiter Ace was a small computer system developed by Jupiter Cantab, founded by Richard AltwasserRichard Altwasser and Steven Vickers, both of whom had worked on the ZX Spectrum. Named after the early British computer, the Pilot ACE, the Jupiter Ace utilized the Forth programming language instead of the more common BASIC. Sales were slow, with only around 5,000 units sold before the company closed. The machine struggled to gain acceptance due to its use of Forth, limited published software, poor case design, and small initial memory. Additionally, its tile-based monochrome graphics were inferior to competing machines' pixel-based color graphics.
The Jupiter Ace was similar in size, cost, and form factor to the ZX81, but had a design more akin to the ZX Spectrum. It used a Zilog Z80 processor and featured an 8 KB ROM and 1 KB of user RAM. The computer's audio capabilities were CPU-controlled, and storage was managed through a cassette tape interface. Its character set was based on ASCII-1967 with extensions, and it included a 40-key QWERTY keyboard.
