REVIEW CONTINUED FROM PT1
Then when I got to the second boss, I realised something. This is a souls like game. It was a punishing boss. Hardly any opportunities to get near it. Especially with my 1-inch reach sword. My magic attacks seemed useless, or even if there was something useful, I would run out of magic power far too quickly so would hardly make a dent on its health bar.
The boss was huge, and it could jump away at any moment, and start wailing projectiles at me which were difficult to dodge or my block could not block them all because my stamina bar would deplete.
Even when I got close, the boss can simply turn slightly and can’t get near it’s face or tail.
The health bar is also far too big so the whole fight is a long slog.
I could never dodge it’s attacks 100% so it felt like luck if I would get any hits in or not be dead early. No matter how many attempts I had, I didn’t feel like I was getting better. Sometimes I would get close which would give me heart to go on, and then on the next turn I would die instantly. This was the same for every boss after this which completely ruined the game for me.
This was such a shame because I really loved the first half of the game. The graphics are beautiful. The music is wonderful. The combat is good (against small characters) and the whole Zelda vibe is present – although it could have done with some more puzzles and Zelda-like dungeons.
The puzzles in this game are down to the instruction manual drip feeding you information in a cryptic way. You find pages of the manual throughout the game and you must decipher what it means as it is written in a non-existent language. This seems like a good idea and makes you feel great when you work things out but if you don’t figure something out from the cryptic clues, you’re pretty much buggered as you don’t to figure them out yourself.
There are some very important things that you need to know as well. For example, praying to these monolith alters. If you don’t figure out that you have to hold still and press A for about 5 seconds next to these, you aren’t going to make any progress through the game. The manual gives a very vague reference but only if you find the page and only if you don’t ignore the reference because you think it doesn’t mean anything yet. It could mean that you need to get the pray move first.
Another example is for the power up cards which you can get. When equipped, they give you perks like better defence at low health, or attack up while attack down. It was not clear to me at all what any of these perks did and I would equip them randomly hoping they were doing what I was hoping. Every time I was wrong. The manual tries to cryptically explain but none of them made sense to me. I had to use a guide later on in the game to actually be able to use them. This should not have been hidden.
I even had one equipped which gave me a hit that made enemies go on fire but reduced my energy to 1HP. What is the point in that? And because I didn’t know, I was walking around with a death wish.
Another gripe is the lack of consumable items and cash in the game to buy the items. I tried to collect as many things as possible and not waste any money. I didn’t once buy any consumables because I used all of my money on power ups. Once you collect all the treasure chests in the game and kill every enemy you see, you just have enough to upgrade yourself which is paramount.
If you use your consumables, you won’t get them back.
The most useful were the health and magic potion refills but these were so scarce. I could only use them on boss fights, and only on the attempt when I thought I would be able to do it. So out of dozens of fights, I had to be confident enough to use my consumables and win the fight, otherwise they would be wasted and I wouldn’t be able to get any more, unless I spent ages grinding for coins which would take an age as they are expensive and I could lose my consumables again.
There are other expensive items that I didn’t purchase as they cost 1000 coins which takes a very long time to cumulate. Especially to buy these wishing well coins which turn out to be not worth the money at all (again, guide needed to understand what these are for).
Every time I beat a boss later on in the game, it was down to whatever consumable I had left, and honestly, if I had used them up and failed my boss attempt, I don’t know if I would have been able to beat some of the bosses at all.
