In my opinion, some bash turn-based combat in RPG and Strategy games like Boulder's Gate 3 for nothing. Although I really love real-time combat, I do find turn-based combat to have its own unique gameplay offering that no real-time combat can offer. I look at it more like a relaxing puzzle game experience.
I love tactical turn-based games that require some moments of thought before jumping into a fight and punishing the player for not doing just that.
This type of old-school game design is still here because people want to be able to enjoy a relaxing yet demanding gameplay experience, one that feels more like playing a board game but still combines the immersive 3D worlds of traditional games. I think that's exactly what Larian Studios is trying to achieve with Boulder's Gate 3 and as it did immensely well with Divinity II.
I look at these games as puzzlers with beautiful 3D worlds. Games that require me to think three times before I make a move have in-depth strategic options and a higher learning curve to appeal to the adult audience, especially those who grew on those old-school games as kids (like myself).
If you haven't tried one, well, at least give one a try. If you love FPS games, I recommend trying Wasteland 3, it's available for free on GamePass as of the time of making these videos and it's really a good turn-based RPG game that I recommend trying.
