Turning tragedy into triumph, Cam Ayala found a new purpose for his life.
Cam Ayala's lifelong battle has turned into his new lifelong passion. Cam diagnosed at age 11 with Lymphedema, a disease that causes swelling and infection in the extremities. He would lose his right leg to the disease at 33.
The former college basketball player though refused to let the setback define him. He took up wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, running and Cam became an advocate for others with limb loss. "Lots of people who have gone through Lymphedema and limb loss have helped me. I feel a obligation and an honor to pass the torch and pay it forward."
Cam started a podcast called "Above and Below" with fellow amputee James Dixon to mentor and help other amputees. He is now an amputee advocate raising funds and awareness. Cam's latest venture, he joined 15 other amputees to climb 19-thousand foot Mt. Cayambe in Ecuador. Ayala helping raise money and awareness for prosthetic need in Central and South America while also showing it can be done. Cam says, "I headed down to Ecuador with the Range of Motion Project to prove you can do something hard like climb a mountain if you have access to quality prosthetics and prosthetic care."
Cam's journey has been long and it's been grueling at times, but it's brought him to a new purpose in life, a purpose to help others. "I walk with a pride, I walk with a purpose bigger than myself, its to serve other people."
