Turrican Flashback - PlayStation 4 - Showcase of gameplay from all four games and new features. [4K]
Taking a look at the first level of each of the four included games on this collection, Turrican (Amiga), Turrican II The Final Fight (Amiga), Mega Turrican (Mega Drive/Genesis) and Super Turrican (SNES). Experience each game's intro and the amazing Chris Huelsbeck music scores, combined with the gameplay created by Manfred Trenz and the many great ports by Factor 5. With an introduction from us about the series and the included features for the title and if it is worth your cash.
On the plus side this collection contains the best version of each included title, the Amiga's port of Turrican III was based on an unfinished Mega Turrican build, but some prefer the Amiga music. However some tracks are debatable which sound better. On the down side it is missing a number of games from the series, Super Turrican 2 on SNES, Super Turrican on NES and the rather interesting PC port of Turrican II that had redone graphics for 1995.
Sadly this collections has more cons than pros, it has nothing in the way of extras, just zip. Other than screen filter options and the added rewind feature. No art gallery, no game maps, no sprite viewer, no music test (Only the original in-game ones and Super Turrican doesn't have one), no interviews, no videos, nothing, nada, zip, zilch and zero extras to be found here. Yet a quick tour of YouTube reveals there is quite a lot of bonus content on the unfinished Turrican games. The only real main selling point is the fact that almost all these games haven't been re-released since they first came out or had limited digital Virtual Console releases in North America only.
If you grew up in Europe in the late 80s and early 90s and owned a home computer it's fair to say you most likely will have heard of Turrican. It was seen as one of the best early games on the Amiga with the sequel improving the gameplay in every area. While the console follow ups were decent games they lacked the wow factor of the original title and the series quickly got left behind. As good a games as Mega and Super Turrican were, they were both out classed by early titles on the console.
That said while some people may find them a little dated now and the original Turrican is a very unforgiving game. They are very well put together titles that are far more fairer than many other home computer games from that era. Still superb title, that fans will no doubt enjoy the trip down memory lane is it worth full price, however? Well not really, unless you're a die hard fan keen to play them again after all these years.
Overall the emulation of all four games is very good and we couldn't see any obvious emulation issues. There is an issue with the two Amiga games (Turrican 1 & 2) however, they use the original European version which run at 50Hz. As a result at 60Hz this introduces 10 static frames into the game and it causes scrolling to shudder slightly. Both the console games uses their 60Hz image and don't have this issue. We did have an issue with the left analogue stick sticking as well on some games, but not with the d-pad. While it's great to see Turrican back, neither collections releasing this year do the games and series justice.
