Tutorial - Action Percussion in Logic Pro, part 1.
A little tutorial on working with the Kontakt sampler. How to create your own cool custom arpeggiated percussion patterns for music scores to create pace, movement and tension.
If you just throw an arpeggiator on a single sample you usually end up with a uninteresting static machinegun sound. This tutorial explains the use of "sample start point" to create dynamic and organic patterns so often heard in many modern scores.
In the tutorial I use a simple but nice "throwing dice" sample from one of the games I scored recently, but this sample could easily be anything. Try the technique with a distorted bass, guitar riff or a sharp pan-flute overblown sample (ie. like in the Planescape Torment OST). =)
The good thing is that this technique only require ONE sample, and not tons of multi-samples, so the final instrument is very light-weight.
Consider this as a "part 1 tutorial", where the upcoming part 2 will explain a bit more about automating the patch with distortion, delay, decay, attack etc. to maintain interest throughout a musical piece.
I know there are many libraries out there that are designed to fill this "gap", but it's very fun and educational to create your own unique sounds. And a good start to dig into your favourite sampler and get to know it better.
