With Randovania 4.0, there is finally a very good randomizer available to play Metroid Dread with. But since it’s in an early stage, it’s not as easy to setup as one might hope, so here’s a short tutorial.

What you need:
1. Metroid Dread.nsp/xci/romfs

With this, I can’t help you, for obvious reasons. Dump your own copy of Metroid Dread with tools such as NXDumpTool or SX Dumper or do the thing we won’t talk about here. But please: Buy. The. Game. https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/metroid-dread-switch/

2. Ryujinx (Emulator)

Ryujinx can extract the game easily by just right-clicking it, so I’d recommend using it. Get it here:
https://ryujinx.org/download/

2.1 Extract your game to a romfs (if you didn’t already do this)

Add a Game Directory in Ryujinx: Click Options→Settings→Game Directories→Add and navigate to your game. After this, your games will be listed.
Right-click Metroid Dread→Extract Data→RomFS. Having to do this is a limitation of the current build and is likely to be changed in the future.

While you’re at it, right-click the game again and click Open Mods Directory. Create a folder called randovania.

3. A randovania dev build

For whatever reason, neither Randovania 4.0 nor 4.0.1 actually include the patcher for Metroid Dread, so we gotta download a dev build.

You have to join their discord: https://discord.gg/M23gCxj6fw

Go to the “roles” channel and react to the message regarding beta testers. This is necessary to login to a Randovania dev build.

Now navigate to the “dev-builds” channel and download the most recent dev build. In order to download dev builds, you will need a github account. Note that since these aren't release builds, there might be glitches, bugs and unforeseen issues.

You are settled for the early randomizer glory now.

To create randomized seeds for Metroid Dread, allow experimental games by clicking Advanced→Experimental games.

Under Generate Games, you can see Metroid Dread and its default preset which you may customize by right-clicking it. If you’re satisfied with your settings, just click Generate to create a seed. This might fail a few times, but you can try it again and/or adjust your settings.

If it succees, you get a new window with all the information about the randomized game. To make this playable, click Export Game:

Input File: The romfs folder you extracted.
Output File: Metroid Dread’s mods folder. Might look something like this: X:\Users\XXX\AppData\Roaming\Ryujinx\mods\contents\010093801237c000\randovania

Click Accept and pray to RNGesus that it works.

If everything goes well, all there is left for you to do is start the game and HAVE A BLAST!
